The University of Minnesota is dedicated to serving the University’s international student community by cultivating an inclusive community and providing expertise, updates, and information.

International students are students studying at the University of Minnesota while on non-immigrant visas, most commonly F-1 and J-1 student visas.

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS)

International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) staff members are trained to provide information and counseling to international students and scholars about academic, immigration, legal, career, financial, personal, and family matters, as well as issues of cross-cultural adjustment and professional integration upon returning home.

There are many programs, groups, and events intended to help international students build community and meet people.

Career Services

Career Services has specific information and resources to help international students with the career exploration and preparation process.

Student Legal Services

SLS offers legal services and education to UMN students in a variety of areas such as immigration, tenancy, criminal, and personal and family issues.

Minnesota English Language Program (MELP)

MELP offers multilingual students free, one-on-one support with speaking, organization, and grammar in writing, listening comprehension.

Minnesota International Student Association (MISA)

MISA is a student group whose mission is to represent the international students at the University of Minnesota, and promote and enhance the interaction between international and local students. Their focus is to help international students get accustomed to the new environment.

Academic Counseling

ISSS academic counselors provide support about understanding the educational system at the U of M, including what to expect in the classroom, how to set and achieve academic goals, and where to go when you need help.

The Center for Academic Planning and Exploration (CAPE) has major exploration tips and resources specifically for international students.

Library Guide for International Students

The University of Minnesota’s 12 libraries provide a wide range of collections and services to students. The library has guides for international students in multiple languages.

Multicultural Student Engagement (MCSE)

MCSE provides diverse opportunities to all students to increase awareness, understanding, and an appreciation for cultural differences, social justice, and intersectionality. MCSE promotes leadership development, student success, and retention through engaging educational programs.
